Washington’s 8th Straight Win Moves Them Way Up
It seems like we’re looking at three teams to lift the Stanley Cup above their heads. San Jose, Chicago, or Washington are all being looked at as Cup favorites. Buffalo has come up a lot as well, but the way they’ve been playing lately, I don’t think that will happen.
Right now, there is no team hotter than the Washington Capitals, who have just beaten the Anaheim Ducks to gain their eighth straight win. As always, their offense has been the biggest factor. In the eight games they’ve won, they have scored four or more goals in seven of them. They routed a couple of teams as well, the most recent being the 5-1 destruction of Anaheim.
However, they have done a lot more than that. The Caps also had a 7-2 victory over the Islanders, a 6-3 win over the Penguins, and a 6-1 win over the Maple Leafs. They aren’t even giving the other teams a chance to win.
Right now, the Capitals are coming closer and closer to running away with the Eastern Conference. They are six points ahead of the second place Devils. Obviously, nobody wants to play the Caps. But, they’re still not first in the NHL. The Caps are still two points behind the San Jose Sharks who have also been playing well lately.
It seems like the Caps have had just about everything happening to them at the same time. They have a new captain in Alex Ovechkin, who was already the figurehead of the team, and according to “On Frozen Blog” they are receiving a ton of help from younger players. You can see everything about that in “The State of the Capitals’ Union” post that is on OFB.
The difference between this team and other NHL teams is that they’re not just expected to make the playoffs. We hear about the “playoff hunt” all the time, and it’s affecting a lot of teams. However, the Capitals are safely above the “playoff hunt”. In fact, they’re expected to go far in the playoffs. This season would still be considered a failure if they were eliminated in the first round.
The important thing is that they do well in the playoffs. Caps fans are not going to be happy with anything less than a Stanley Cup appearance. They don’t want to repeat San Jose’s mistake last year. Hopefully, they’ll be able to continue the intense play in the playoffs and make a run that the fans are hoping for.
