Gretzky Stepping Down
I haven’t been following the situation in Phoenix very closely, and I was a little surprised that Gretzky resigned as head coach, but after listening to him talk and seeing his statement, I can’t say I blame him.
For those of you who don’t know (I’ll make this quick), Phoenix is in bankruptcy court after a horrible year of losing money (25 million dollars in debt). Right now, the ownership is up for grabs and it’s been narrowed down to 2 of the bidders.
The problem for Gretzky is that neither bidder has a plan for him. They have both said that Gretzky doesn’t fit in their plans for the franchise. Which, I guess isn’t surprising because a coach never fits into a clubs new plan.
Gretzky said that this decision was very hard for him and I’d believe it. However, I think he made the right choice. If he decides to continue coaching, he will hopefully continue with a club that he will fit into better.
I saw a great post on OTRSportsOnline that talked about this a little more in depth. If you’d like more information, you should check that out.
