Penguins vs. Sabres – Rupp Beats up Guastad

Although Rupp definitely won the fight, I don’t think it says anything about who’s stronger. It’s very difficult to fight when you have an injured hand, and when Gaustad injured his hand, he no longer had a chance in the fight.

Sheldon Souray vs. Jarome Iginla

I’m going to have to call this one a very well fought draw. I think the announcers summed it up better than I ever will be able to. I’m really glad that they had the hit from Iginla on Souray, I was going to get that one and put it up, but now I don’t have to.

This fight could have gone either way. Iginla got the upper edge at the beginning. Most of the time, the refs would have jumped in and ended it. You could see them jump when Iginla went down too for a second, but for the most part they gave Souray a chance to get back up. They did a great job letting these two players settle an old score.

The other thing I like about this fight is the frustration that you could see in both players. There wasn’t any defensiveness in either one of them. Both were focused on attacking the other player and throwing as many punches as possible.

Patrick Eaves vs. Kris Versteeg

This is a fight from a game that I was at, and let me tell you, the crowd loved every minute of it. It’s not often that you see Patrick Eaves fight, but he showed yesterday that he’s not a bad fighter.

Despite the pain of having to say this, I think Versteeg won. He had a couple of good shots early that probably frustrated Eaves more than anything. However, both players gave a lot of effort.

The thing that this video doesn’t show is the two players talking to each other during the faceoff. It was pretty obvious that there was going to be a fight. I know that I wasn’t surprised when they dropped the gloves and threw off the helmets, which by the way, is a great display of ethics on both of their part.

Really, this was an all around clean fight that both players should be proud of.

Dave Steckel vs Zenon Konopka

So, this definitely goes to Konopka. Steckel had a great start, and I really like that jab he did at the beginning of the fight. However, that may have just made Konopka a little more upset because he turned around and started throwing everything.

I’d also like you to take a look at the clock. Tampa Bay was winning 7-4, with just over three and a half minutes to play in the game. This is a situation where there are going to be a lot of fights.

This is when both teams stop caring about the game, because it’s pretty much already been decided. I bet that if this were a closer game that this fight wouldn’t have happened. You can tell that there is a little bit of frustration on both sides too.

Clowe definitely wins this fight. He only had two good punches, but that’s more than what we can say about Strudwick.

I think that we should be seeing a lot more of these fights out of the Oilers for the remainder of the season. Since they’re probably not going to go anywhere, they’re going to try to gain respect by fighting. That’s usually how it ends up.

This fight was interesting because it showed that San Jose doesn’t just have talent, they also have a player that can drop the gloves and win a fight.

First Ever Winter Classic Fight: Carcillo vs. Thornton

Well, there’s no doubt that Carcillo got the better of Thornton in this fight. However, this fight has more of a historical value than anything.

This is the first fight that the Winter Classic has ever seen. If there’s anything that we should learn from that fight, it’s the respect that the announcers were talking about. Both of these guys had an obvious respect for the others talent.

Even though both wanted to win the fight, they only wanted to show that they were better than the other. They weren’t trying to hurt each other, only show dominance. If you’re going to fight, then that’s how you fight.

However, the fans loved it, and you can tell in the video that the players loved it as well.

Tanner Glass Fights Brandon Prust

This one started out pretty slow, but it made up for it towards the end. There were a couple of good punches thrown at the end.

The thing that stuck out to me was how tired they looked after the fight. You could see that both were working hard and wrestling a lot.

I’m going to have to call this one slightly in favor of Glass. Even though both players had a couple of strong moments, I think that Glass’ were a little bit longer. However, Prust did a great job keeping it close.

McGratten vs. Koci

I’m going to have to call this one a draw. Both players had some very good punches and both are extremely tough guys.

Oilers vs. Lightning (2 Fights)

More Fights

Last night’s game between the Oilers and Lightning was a pretty interesting game. There were some great plays, but there were also a couple of fights.

Stortini vs. Konopka

The first fight of the night came between Stortini and Konopka. It was a long fight and both players put in a good effort. This one really could have gone either way, until Konopka got the advantage.

Downey vs. Stone

This fight was interesting. The whistle had blown and the play was over. It was obvious that the Oilers were trying to get to Downey before he went to the box to serve his tripping call.

Downey and Stone have both fought before, and are two very tough guys. That’s what made this fight fun to watch. We get to see two very tough guys fight each other at an awkward time on the ice, after the whistle and during a tie game.

Normally, you would have Stone wait until the penalty was over. But, you could tell that they were upset with Downey and wanted to get him right then. So, here’s the replay below.

I’m going to have to give this fight to Stone. He had a clear advantage for most of the fight and Downey was having a tough time getting set. Feel free to run below and let me know what you think with a comment.
